(Conflicted was the name of a series of conversations I imagined up last year for a tree at the elementary school near our house. It appears it is about to face autumn again with the same split color scheme.)
Again, with the early red?
Light's waning. The kids are wearing their jackets on the playground. It's time.
I hate that time.
I know. But, face it: time is inexorable. And there's also something about carotenoids in our leaves, but I'm not entirely clear on the science side of these things.
Summer wasn't particularly pleasant. I feel like we barely got to enjoy ourselves. It was hotter than a blackbird baked in a pie.
And just as sticky. The heat was stifling. I could use a drink.
Me, too. The sky doesn't look too promising.
It is a beautiful blue, I must say. And it's nice to see the kids again, playing Four Square and chase.
You are such an optimist about everything. How can you be all cheerful when you know what's in store for us? The branch-snapping cold, the unwanted house guests, the gray and lonely.
Well, I have you, for one thing. And for another, winter isn't forever.
Feels like it.
I know.

Winter up here does last forever...
sigh...
Winter does seem to last longer ~ great shots of a beautiful tree ~ (A Creative Harbor)
I love autumn and I can tolerate winter as long as there is not freezing rains and slick roads...snow is actually a welcome sight! Long cozy nights, a warm fire, hot chocolate...it sounds pretty good after the unbearably hot and humid summer we had this year!
I hate the time that is coming too. But knowing that I am sharing it with Tree makes it seem less dreadful somehow.
I'm ready for winter, and our deciduous trees really do need a good winter's nap.
Summer lasts forever here and I miss having four seasons. Our trees don't turn color...the leaves just dry up and fall off all winter. That's the one thing I miss more than anything else...the beautiful fall colors. Are they really wearing jackets already??? I'm envious.
I remember your post from last year re your schizophrenic tree...LOL...hang in there and enjoy the moment. We'll have to keep you laughing to warm you up in the winter...maybe I need to start posting photos from the tropics for you!!! :)
I think there is a lot of wisdom in that tree! It understands our conflict about this too hot summer and the too cold winter that is sure to follow. ~ Maureen
Not ready for winter...wouldn't it be nice if there were just two seasons...fall and spring :)
Love that conversation! I am anxious to see the marshes down here when autumn come and they begin to change colors.
Love when you wax poetic about that tree. Something about it brings out your most awesome writing skills.
I love the word inexorable.
Really right! It's coming soon...and if your tree really really could talk it would say BRAVO!
Winter is coming soon but fall first but I like every season when it soesn't take too long. Lomg winters are terrible.
What an interesting way to craft a post. I wonder...how much of the conversation reflects your own feelings about winter?
love this posting style! i might have to try it too :) definitely agree about summer tho... far too hot!

I remember you commenting about this tree changing last year!
I think winter sounds awesome...but I haven't experienced it in so long that perhaps I have romanticized the cold, snow and grey!
I liked the really unique angle you wrote this post from!
Thank you!
