Lights, Camera, Nap

Raise your hand if you think it's okay if I stop the tree decking with just twinkle and bubble lights this year.

Thanks. I believe I will.

Looks good, right?

(A new book and the couch are calling my name this dreary Sunday. The decorations, not so much.)

I found a few of the old boys for the mantel.

And I unearthed these from my childhood:

When my brothers closed out our apartment in New York many years ago, an enormous truck delivered all the geegaws and doodads and blonde furniture that had been our parents'. Of all the china, glassware and 1940s-era stuff that made the cross-country trip, only the O in NOEL was damaged.

Seems appropriate it was the O. As in, "O! Kansas City? Never heard of it." (New York angels are very sassy.)

I never did find the missing bit.

My brothers, both thousands of years older than I am, took great joy in rearranging the choir each Christmas. LEON was one variation. Another:

As in, "ELNO we won't go!" Afterall, it was the 1960s.

Much, much later came the final anagram, unimaginable when these girls first were made 60+ years ago:

If you're thinking we have too much time on our hands, you would be right. I could have had the entire tree decorated by now.

Instead, we've been busy stirring the first batch of the season:

And what says Christmas more than Chex cereal baked in too much butter and Seasoned Salt?

Care to share your odd Christmas memories? I'd love to hear them. Leave me a comment.

Chex cereal mix - it's like marshmallow's on sweet potato casserole, or Melt-Away mints from Fanny Farmer. They all bring out the true meaning of Christmas in some bizarre way.
The proper placement of the candles, by the way, is, in fact "LEON" and my carolers are so-arranged right about now above my desk.
Good to hear that Bandit is up for helping with the tree decorations. Bailey has eschewed all decorating, in favor of waiting around the kitchen for a dropped cracker crumb or stray carrot.

My mother has those same carolers. I'll have to check out the condition of her "o"

I remember my Dad slinging the tinsel on the tree by the handful. My mother would later take it off and do it her way (one piece at a time).

I have way too many odd Christmas memories to list here, but I wanted to tell Naperville Now that I spent a wonderful dinner last night, out with friends, remembering past Christmases. Your blog initiated wonderful conversations, funny and sad. Thank you!

Your are lucky to have these wee folk that keep so many memories with them. Glad you are not rushed this holiday season. Enjoy you book! ;-)

Traditions seem to come and go at the bungalow, depending on the year. But I think after seeing your picture of the chex mix I might have to add it on as a new one.

Hilarious. (And,that's not sarcasm, in case you were wondering!)
P.S. There are many recipes for Chex mix that claim to be the "original" but I happen to have what is probably the very first one, dated 1952. If so, Chex mix will be 60 years old next year. Come to think of it, so will quite a few of my friends...
